Let’s be clear – South Africa is a great place to see elephants on safari, especially in the Kruger National Park, but it’s by no means the only destination where you get to see these grand behemoths. There are many other places where you can get up close and personal with these magnificent beasts, some of which we will profile here.
The Chobe National Park, Botswana
The Chobe National Park in Botswana is known as an elephant mecca, and home to 50 000 elephants. The park received its name from the Chobe River that forms part of the park’s northern boundary, and attracts a wide variety of diverse wildlife. This results in excellent opportunities for game viewing from and around the river.
The Kruger National Park, South Africa
One of Africa’s largest, and one of the most revered of all national parks, the Kruger National Park is famous for its never-ending safaris. It is also one of the few parks on the continent that provides you with a reasonable chance of spotting elephants throughout the year, as well as other members of the famous Big 5.
Addo Elephant National Park, South Africa
According to the South African National Parks agency, the Addo Elephant National Park is the third largest national park in South Africa. It provides Garden Route travellers with the chance of seeing elephants without having to travel to one of the other parks. Besides, Addo Elephant National Park is the only national park in the world that is home to not only the Big 5, but also the southern right whale and the great white shark.
Etosha National Park, Namibia
If you are planning on a safari anywhere else than at the Kruger National park, the Etosha National Park should be high on your list of desirable destinations, for obvious reasons. Known as being home to the largest variety of birds and mammals in Namibia, you can also find the biggest elephant population in Namibia here.
Book Your Stay at Lukimbi Safari Lodge in The Kruger National Park
If you are in search of a Kruger National Park safari experience that provides you with ample possibility to view elephants and the rest of the Big 5 in their natural habitat, then book your stay at our luxury safari lodge. Our stunning luxury lodge is situated in the easily accessible southern portion of the Kruger National Park, where a vast variety of animals and birds can be seen in their natural habitat. Why not trade the 4×4 for a different safari experience, and try a walking safari in the Kruger Park? Our walking safaris evoke the once-popular image of intrepid hunters on foot, as they slashed their way through dense vegetation, while being plagued by all manner of flying and crawling animals, even though these are long gone. Today, you can take a walking safari through the Kruger National Park in comfort, with pedestrian explorations having largely been replaced by supervised safaris conducted by seasoned guides.
In the Kruger Park today, walking while looking our for a wildlife encounter still remains a popular option, although the only permitted weapons with which to shoot animals are DSLR cameras and smartphones. Perhaps one of the biggest draw cards of a walking safari is the relative silence of the Bushveld. No longer drowned out by the pulsing diesel engine of the 4×4, each sound, from the wind rustling in the trees to the chirping of birds and cries of nearby animals, can be picked up. It simply adds another dimension to the experience, further enhancing the stunning visual impact of the scenic surroundings.
