Book Luxury Accommodation at a Kruger National Park Lodge

When is the Best Time of the Year to Book Luxury Accommodation at a Kruger National Park Lodge?

Have you ever wondered when the best time of the year would be to book accommodation at a luxury lodge in the Kruger Park? Unfortunately, there’s no easy answer. The Kruger National Park is an all-year-round destination, with each season bringing its own highlights. What this means is that you’ll need to weigh up your priorities, and decide on what the best time of year is according to what you want to see, do and experience while visiting the Kruger Park.

If it’s game viewing you’re most excited about, it is best during the dry winter months. However, the wet summer season brings full waterholes, newborn wildlife and lush bushveld, with the migrating birds also arriving. Ultimately, if you shy away from the heat, you’ll have a bit of a tough time during your stay, as the Kruger Park has a hot, sub-tropical climate. Most of the year, it’s hot during the day, with an average temperature of 25°C. Your stay can, however, be made easier by booking your accommodation at a luxury lodge, which is fully kitted out with air conditioning.

Seasons in the Kruger National Park

Summer is traditionally the rainy season in the Kruger National Park. The rains fill the waterholes and rivers, resulting in lush bushveld surroundings, which attract all kinds of animals to the waterholes. Game viewing can at times be more challenging during the summer season, as the vegetation is quite dense. This contributes to making it a bit harder to locate and observe wildlife.

Towards the end of November and the start of December, the park enjoys an explosion of newborns. Spotting wildlife with their young becomes a game, and a memorable part of your Kruger Park experience that you’re not likely to forget. Birding is also excellent during this time, as the migrant birds arrive.

If you’re planning on visiting the Kruger Park during the summer months, it’s always recommended to travel in air-conditioned vehicles, and to book your accommodation at luxury lodges. It can get stiflingly hot during the day, with temperatures exceeding that of 30°C. Don’t let this deter you from visiting during the summer months, as the heat aspect can be controlled and managed with some smart choices.

Winter in the Kruger National Park

Although many visitors prefer the lush vegetation of the summer months, the best time for game watching in the Kruger National Park remains the dry winter season. The reason for this is simple. The bushveld is more open, and thus allows for better visibility. The grass is low, the trees and bushes are more bare, due to it being so dry, and the wildlife moves towards the water.

Rivers, dams and waterholes become a hive of activity during the winter months, and you’re far likelier to spot wildlife in the evenings and mornings, as they arrive for a drink of water. Day temperatures in winter are rather pleasant, but it can get rather chilly during the evenings, so make sure that you pack something warm when going on early morning and late afternoon game drives.

Temperatures Throughout the Year

The summer months in the Kruger Park are hot and incredibly humid, with either occasional thundershowers or continual rain. Many young animals are born throughout this time:

April is the Kruger Park’s autumn period, where the vegetation starts to change from thick, lush-green bush, to a rather sparser browning bush. The temperatures also start to cool down at night, but the daytime is still warm:
